Mel Davis, father of Victor Davis, was Victor’s biggest fan. Preferring to stay out of the spotlight, Mel was always present for Victor showing him unconditional love and support. Mel was a proud union man with Unifor Local 1917, CAW, and National Standard before his passing in November 2022.  Well before Victor rose to international swimming prominence, Mel was a volunteer coach with the Guelph Marlins (1973-1980) where Victor began his swimming career. At the time of Victor’s tragic death, Mel and his family made the unselfish decision to donate Victor’s organs. Following this choice, Mel became involved with the Canadian Organ transplant organization advocating for organ donners.

When the Victor Davis Memorial Fund was launched in 1990, Mel was an active committee member. Mel worked with Victor’s coach Clifford Barry to select eligible candidates for the Memorial Fund up until when Mel passed away. Mel is remembered and thanked for his commitment to swimming and the Victor Davis Memorial Fund throughout his lifetime.

The members of the Victor Davis Memorial Fund Directorate will serve as the Award Committee.  Members of the directorate are:

  • Mr. Chris Bowie, former SNC board member
  • Mr. Ken McKinnon, National Development Coach, Swimming Canada
  • Mr. Dean Boles, CEO, Swim Ontario
