Zevnik claims silver in the 200-m backstroke

FISU Summer Universiade 2017 –

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Montreal’s Alexia Zevnik put up a personal best time in the women’s 200-m backstroke on her way to a silver medal on the second night of finals at the FISU Summer Universiade in Taiwan, Taipei.

Zevnik swam the semifinal of the 200-m backstroke yesterday where she qualified for tonight’s final with a best time of 2:10.93. She went on to eclipse that time in the final with a time of 2:09.92. She has now lowered her best time in her last three swims in the event.

“I just wanted to build off my swim from the morning,” said Zevnik. “I was worrying about my own race and not about the others.”

Zevnik has enjoyed her experience thus far in Taipei.

“It’s been a blast. The atmosphere is great and everyone’s happy to be here and having fun,” she said. “It’s helping us have good performances.”

Canadian teammate Mackenzie Glover also competed in the women’s 200 back where she placed 6th with a time of 2:10.69.

Katerine Savard competed in two events on Monday that included one final and one semifinal. In the women’s 50-m butterfly final, Savard finished 7th with a time of 26.70. In her next event, she qualified for the 100-m freestyle final by posting a time of 55.27. Canadian teammate Jacqueline Keire also swam the 100 free semifinal where she finished 14th with a time of 55.77.

Rob Hill and Luke Reilly both competed in the semifinal of the men’s 200-m individual medley. Hill came to the wall in a time of 2:01.96, placing 13th while Reilly finished his race with a time of 2:03.44 and a 16th place finish.

Kelsey Wog of Regina swam in the semifinal of the women’s 100-m breaststroke. The University of Manitoba swimmer finished 11th, posting a time of 1:09.33.

Markus Thormeyer of the High Performance Centre – Vancouver put up a time of 54.90 to finish 8th in the men’s 100-m backstroke final. Jeremy Bagshaw of the High Performance Centre – Victoria placed 13th with a time of 1:50.00 in the men’s 200-m freestyle, the night’s final event.

The Summer Universiade will resume tomorrow. Finals begin at 7:00 a.m. ET and are being streamed live on CBC at http://www.cbc.ca/sports/summer-universiade-1.4244659.
