Pratt, Herbert and Wiseman reach four gold mark at 2018 Speedo Western Nationals

VICTORIA – Cole Pratt of Calgary, Bailey Herbert of Langley, B.C ., and Avery Wiseman of Drayton Valley, Alta., all won their fourth individual gold medal on Saturday at the 2018 Speedo Western Nationals swimming competition.

In the boys 14-16 age group, Pratt posted a win in the 100-m butterfly in 55.64 seconds. He edged Sterlyng Blair of Leduc, Alta., second in 55.83 and Keir Ogilvie of Victoria was third in 56.85.

Other winners in the boys 14-16 were Michael McGillivray of Regina in the 400-m freestyle and Tyler Wall of Penticton, B.C., in the 200-m backstroke.

‘’I was really pleased with my swim tonight,’’ said McGillivray with his first victory of the meet. ‘’It gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.’’

Herbert also posted her fourth victory in the 100 fly in the girls 13-15 age group clocking 1:03.21. Oksana Chaput of Winnipeg took the silver in 1:03.39 and Hannah Bennett of Calgary was third in 1:03.56.

Also with victories in the 13-15 girls were Amanda McCallum of Nanaimo, B.C., in the 400-m freestyle, and Ella Varga of Calgary in the 200-m backstroke.

Wiseman notched a fourth win in the open 50-m breaststroke. She clocked 32.47 with Herbert second in 32.96 and Pilar McCann of Edmonton third in 33.25.

Winners in the 16 and over women were Molly Gowans of Victoria in the 400-m freestyle – her third gold – Laura Albers of Calgary in the 100-m butterfly and Acacia Benn of Penticton, B.C., in the 200-m backstroke.

‘’I thought my race went really well,’’ said Albers. ‘’The biggest adjustment I made was on my turn which was really bad in the prelims.’’

Winners in the men’s 17 and over were Raben Dommann of North Vancouver in the 400-m freestyle, Nicolaas Dekker of Richmond, B.C., in the 100-m butterfly, Ruishen Yu of Surrey, B.C., in the 50-m breaststroke and Sebastian Somerset of Calgary in the 200-m backstroke.

In Para swimming Amber Thomas of Drayton Valley, Alta., and Connor Bissett of Whitecourt, Alta., were the winners in the 100-m butterfly.

Competition ends Sunday at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
