Hangzhou, China – The 22-year-old Prince George, B.C. native set a new Canadian record in the 50-metre butterfly during her preliminary race Wednesday at the Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Centre.

Black’s time of 25.43 seconds broke the Canadian mark of 25.51, set by two-time Olympian Katerine Savard during the 2016 world short course championships in Windsor, Ont.

Black, a member of the Prince George Barracudas Swim Club and three-time NCAA all-American at Auburn University, entered the Hangzhou event ranked 29th in the 50m butterfly.

She was clocked in 25.60 in Thursday’s semifinal, tied for seventh place, and advanced to Friday’s final.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of The Netherlands had the fastest semifinal time with a mark of 24.84.

Black, one of six Canadian swimmers at the meet, will also compete Friday in the women’s 100-metre butterfly.

Other Canadians in Hangzhou are: Alex Loginov, Alexandre Perreault, Sophie Angus, Aela Janvier and Ingrid Wilm.
