Sanchez spearheads nine win performance for Canada at Swim England Winter Championships

SHEFFIELD, England – Kayla Sanchez was the top win producer for Canada with five gold medals, including a world junior record and Canadian record, at the Swim England Winter Championships in short course swimming which concluded on Sunday.

Sanchez, from Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre-Ontario, earned victories in the women’s 200-m individual medley, 100-m freestyle, 100-m IM, 200-m freestyle and helped Canada to top spot in the 4X100-m freestyle relay with Penny Oleksiak of Toronto, Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., and Hanna Henderson of Etobicoke, Ont.

Sanchez’s time of 23.98 is a world junior record according to the FINA website. The previous best was 24.00 set by Menghui Zhu of China in 2016.  Her  58.24 in the 100-IM is officially a national mark. The previous best was 59.28 set Julia Wilkinson in 2009.

Yuri Kisil of Calgary was a double champion with victories in the men’s 50-m freestyle in 21.52 and the 100-m freestyle in 46.86.

Also with individual victories were Oleksiak, a quadruple Olympic medallist in 2016, in the 50-m butterfly with a Canadian record 25.20 and Kierra Smith of Kelowna in the 200-m breaststroke.

Sanchez added a silver in the 50-m freestyle and a bronze in the 50-m breaststroke.

Other Canadian bronze medallists were Smith in the 100-m breaststroke, Mack Darragh of Oakville, Ont. in the 200-m fly, and Henderson in the 100-m backstroke.
