Savard set to race in 50-m butterfly final

WINDSOR, Ont. – Katerine Savard will race in her second individual final at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) tonight in Windsor, Ont.

Savard, of Pont-Rouge, Que. is seeded eighth going into the 50-m butterfly championship final. The 23-year-old sprinted to 25.76 seconds in the semifinal on Thursday.

Kylie Masse will join her in the evening session after progressing to Friday night’s semifinal seeded fourth in the 50-m backstroke. Her Friday morning time of 26.57 was the second fastest in Canadian history, behind only her slightly faster relay split on Wednesday.

“It felt pretty good, I’m looking forward to tonight.”

The 50-m backstroke was Masse’s sixth swim of the competition. She captured a silver medal in the 100-m backstroke on Wednesday.

“I’m taking it one race at a time, all we can do is focus on one thing at a time,” said the native of nearby Lasalle, Ont.

Both Rachel Nicol and Kierra Smith qualified for the 100-m breaststroke semifinal. Nicol, of Lethbridge, Alta. qualified 15th in 1:06.10 while Smith, of Kelowna, B.C. is seeded 16th after a prelims time of 1:06.18.

Neither of the two Canadian men’s relays advanced to finals. The 4×50-m freestyle team consisting of Javier Acevedo, Yuri Kisil, Mirando Jarry, and Evan Van Moerkerke finished 10th, while the 4×200-m freestyle relay of Markus Thormeyer, Stefan Milosevic, Acevedo, and Jeremy Bagshaw finished 12th.
