Canada’s Gabe Mastromatteo wins gold at Junior Pan Pacs

2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships –

SUVA, Fiji – Gabe Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., capped a triple medal Canadian performance Friday with gold in the men’s 100-m breaststroke at the Junior Pan Pacific swimming championships.

Nina Kucheran of Sudbury, Ont., and Avery Wiseman of Drayton Valley, Alta., added silver and bronze in the women’s 100-m breaststroke.

In the men’s 100-m breaststroke, Mastromatteo clocked a personal best one minute and 01.27 seconds for the victory. Daniel Roy of the U.S. was second in 1:01.85 and Yamato Fukasawa of Japan was third at 1:02.60. Alex Milanovich of Etobicoke, Ont., was sixth in 1:03.38.

‘’I kind of had a general idea of where I was during the race and I wanted to get to the wall fast,’’ said Mastromatteo. ‘’It was the fastest I’ve ever been so I can’t complain. I didn’t think too much during the race, just to go as fast as I can.’’

In the women’s 100-m breaststroke, Emily Weiss of the U.S. was first in a meet record 1:07.55 with Kucheran second in a personal best 1:08.37 and Wiseman third in 1:08.52.

‘’It was so good, I’m so happy,’’ said Kucheran. ‘’Coming into this meet I never felt so strong and focused. I’ve been super excited to come here and race and I’m so pleased it’s going the way I want it too.’’

Wiseman was also pleased with her race.

‘’I couldn’t see anybody except Nina so I was just sticking with her,’’ said Wiseman. ‘’It was a good decision.’’

Both Canadian 4X200-m freestyle relays were fourth. The women clocked 8:13.37 with Emma O’Croinin of Edmonton, Ainsley McMurray of Cote-St-Luc, Que., Margaret MacNeil of London, Ont., and Hanna Henderson of Etobicoke, Ont..

The men clocked 7:31.39 with Justin Konik of Eobicoke, Ont., Cole Pratt of Calgary, Finlay Knox of Okotoks, Alta., and Joshua Liendo of North York, Ont.

Other Canadian finalists in women’s competition were: MacNeil and McMurray sixth and seventh in the 100 freestyle in 55.84 and 55.85 and Bailey Herbert of Langley, B.C. and Victoria Kwan of Markham, Ont., sixth and eighth in the 400-m individual medley in 4:49.95 and 4:53.15.
Canada has five medals after two days of competition with one gold, two silver and two bronze.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
