Brown and McMillan add to gold medal haul in open water victories at 2019 Canadian Junior Swimming Championships

2019 Canadian Junior Swimming Championships –

CALGARY – Eric Brown of Pointe-Claire, Que., added a fourth gold and Ashley McMillan of Penticton, B.C., earned her third victory to highlight the open water swimming races Monday at the Canadian Junior Championships.

In the girls 15-17 three kilometre, McMillan triumphed in 39:31.60. Regan Rathwell of Ottawa took the silver in 39:52.20 and Catherine Minic of Grand Prairie, Alta., was third in 39:53.50.

‘’I don’t get a lot of open water experience so it was really fun to get a chance to race it,’’ said McMillan, also the 200-m and 400-m individual medley winner in the pool at these championships. ‘’I could have never imagined it turned out this well.’’

In the men’s 16-18 three kilometre race, Brown clocked 36 minutes and 29.10 seconds at the event held on Lake Chapparal. Guillaume Lord of Boucherville, Que., was second in 36:30.30 and Xavier Pimentel of Gatineau, Que., third in 36:32.10.

This past week in the pool, Brown also won the 400-m, 800-m and 1500-m freestyles.

In the boys 14-15 age group 1.5 kilometre race, Joshua Baldwin of Edmonton took the title in 18:49.60. Artiom Volodin of Montreal was second in 18:55.20 and Charles Bertrand of Ottawa was third in 19:03.50.

‘’It really hurts but I haven’t been this happy in years,’’ said Baldwin. ‘’It feels like the start of a vacation. When I arrived at the lake this morning, even though it was really cold, I felt ready.’’

In the girls 13-14 1.5 kilometre, Teagan McKenzie of Calgary was first in 20:18.40, Emma Finlin of Edmonton was second in 20:19.10 and Devon Angus of Calgary third in 20:20.50.
