Taylor’s Bio

  • Returned from a wrist injury to help the 4×100 freestyle relay team finish seventh at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. She also swam the preliminary heat of the mixed 4×100 free to help the team qualify for the final, where Canada finished fourth.
  • At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Ruck finished sixth and ninth in the 200-m and 100-m backstroke. Ruck also swam in the preliminaries for the women’s 4×100-m freestyle that went on to capture silver and swam backstroke in the heat of the 4×100-m medley that went on to earn bronze.
  • At her first Olympic Games in 2016, Ruck swam in both the 4×100-m and 4×200-m freestyle relays where she won bronze medals for both events, breaking both Canadian records in the process.
  • At the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Ruck was part of the 4×100-m freestyle relay team that captured silver, the 4×200-m freestyle relay team that earned bronze and the mixed 4×100-m medley relay team that finished 11th. She was a heat swimmer for the mixed 4×100-m freestyle relay that went on to capture silver. Individually, Ruck finished sixth in the 200-m freestyle and 17th in the 100-m backstroke.
  • At the Gwangju 2019 FINA World Championships, Ruck was a part of the women’s 4×100-m and 4×200-m freestyle teams that brought home bronze and broke the Canadian records. Ruck also swam in the preliminaries for the 4×100-m medley relay that captured bronze in the finals. Individually, Ruck finished fourth in the 100-m backstroke and fifth in the 100-m freestyle and 200-m backstroke.
  • Taylor Ruck won a total of eight medals at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games which tied Canada’s Ralph Hutton (1966) and Australians Emily Seebohm (2010) and Susie O’Neill (1998) for the most medals won by an athlete at a single Games.
  • Ruck won gold and set the Commonwealth record in the 200-m freestyle. She also set a Canadian record in the 50-m freestyle where she tied for silver.
  • At the same event, individually she earned a silver in the 200-m backstroke, and two bronze medals in 100-m backstroke and 100-m freestyle. Ruck was also a member of the relay teams that earned a silver in the 4×100-m and 4×200-m freestyle relay, as well as the 4×100-m medley relay.
  • At the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, Taylor Ruck became the first Canadian to win five medals at a single Pan Pacs. Ruck won gold and broke the Championships and Commonwealth record in the 200-m free.
  • At the same event, Ruck also captured silver in the 200-m backstroke and bronze in the 100-m freestyle in a personal best time. She was also a member of the 4×100-m and 4×200-m freestyle relays that took home bronze.
  • Ruck captured silver in the 100-m and 200-m backstroke at the 2022 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials. She also earned bronze in the 100-m and 200-m freestyle. Her performances earned her a spot on the Budapest 2022 FINA World Championships team.
  • Ruck was provisionally nominated for the 2020 Olympic Games for her performance in 2019. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Trials, Ruck captured silver in the 100-m & 200-m backstroke.
  • At the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships, Ruck won gold in 200-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay while also capturing silver in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
  • At the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials, Ruck won gold in the 100-m freestyle and captured silver in the 200-m freestyle, 100-m backstroke and 200-m backstroke to qualify for the 2019 FINA World Championships.
  • At the 2018 Canadian Swimming Trials in Edmonton, Ruck won gold in the 200-m freestyle.
  • At the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis, Ruck brought home five relay gold medals, which include the women’s 4×100-m medley, 4×100 free and 4×200 free as well as the mixed 4×100 free and 4×100 medley.
  • At the same competition, Ruck won a sixth gold in the 200-m freestyle and a silver in the 100-m backstroke.
  • Ruck became the most decorated athlete at the World Junior Championships with 13 total medals.
  • At the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships, Ruck won gold and set a new age group record (15-17) in the 200-m backstroke.
  • At the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships (25-m) in Windsor, Ont. Ruck took part in six events including four relays. Individually she earned herself a bronze medal in the 200-m freestyle in a Canadian record time of 1:52.50. She also finished 14th in the 400-m freestyle in a personal best time.
  • At the same competition, she was a member of the gold medal winning 4×50-m and 4×200-m freestyles that both set new Canadian records. She also swam in the prelims of the 4×100-m medley relay that later won a silver medal. Finally, she was a member of the 4×100-m freestyle that was disqualified.
  • At the Monte-Carlo stop of the 2016 Mare Nostrum Tour, Ruck brought home a silver medal in the 400-m freestyle.
  • At the Charlotte stop of the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series, Ruck earned a silver medal in the 200-m freestyle.
  • Ruck was born in Kelowna, B.C., and her family moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. when she was 10 months old for her father’s work.
  • At the 2016 Canadian Olympic & Para-Swimming Trials, Ruck earned a silver medal in the 400-m freestyle, and earned a spot as a relay swimmer with a 5th-place finish in the 200-m freestyle.
  • At the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships, Ruck collected three gold medals in the 100-m freestyle, 200-m freestyle and mixed 4×100-m freestyle relay. As a fifteen-year-old, Ruck’s time in the 100-m freestyle set a Canadian age group record in the 15-17 age category.
  • At the same competition, she served in the anchor position for the silver-medal winning 4×200-m freestyle relay, and earned two more bronze medals in the 200-m backstroke and 4×100-m freestyle relay.
  • Ruck was named Swimming Canada’s Youth Female Swimmer of the Year in 2015.
  • At the 2015 US Junior National Championships, Ruck earned two gold medals in the 200-m and 400-m freestyle, a bronze in the 800-m freestyle and a 5th place finish in the 50-m freestyle.
  • At the 2015 Arizona state high school swimming and diving championships, Ruck won both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, setting a new state record in the 200 as a sophomore.
  • Her father, Colin Ruck, was a player in the Western Hockey League from 1987-1991.
  • Ruck drew inspiration from Missy Franklin, another swimmer with Canadian roots, because of her work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Ruck began swimming lessons at 11 months, and has loved the water from a young age.
